Gwalior is in Gwalior district. Gwalior was once known as Gopadri or Gopachala. This ancient city is famous for forts, temples and Indian classical music.
Gwalior's history is traced back to a legend: In 8 AD, a chieftain called Suraj Sen was stricken by a deadly disease. He was cured by a hermitsaint, Gwalipa, and in gratitude founded a city which he named after the saint who had given him the gift of a new life. It has relics from the period of the Gupta, Hun, Pratihara, Tomara, Pathan, Moghul, Maratha and the British.
Today, Gwalior is one of the most developed cities of India with factories producing cotton, yarn, paint, ceramics, chemicals, and leather products. The city is also famous for many esteemed educational institutions. |
