Khajuraho is in Chatarpur district. In khajuraho there are 22 temples. Originally there are 85 temples but only 22 have survived. These temples are built in 9th through the 13th centuries, in the Indo Aryan Nagara style. Khajuraho Temples are the most graphic, erotic and sensuous sculptures of India.
Each temple is different from one another. While each temple in Khajuraho has a distinct plan and design, several features are common to all. Two temples are made sandstone. The stone blocks were first carved and then the interlocking pieces were assembled to form a temple. Chaunsat Yogini temple is the oldest temple in Khajuraho.
In theses temples images of gods, warriors, animals are curved but the images of naked women (apsaras) and the more famous carved erotic images (mithun) of possible, probable and improbable positions and postures make the temples of Khajuraho a favorite with domestic and international tourists.
These temples are divided in three parts Eastern Group of Temples , Southern Group of Temples , Western Group of Temples. Western group of temples are designated as the World Heritage Site
Khajuraho was the historic capital of the Chandellas (9th to 13th century). |
